Now by the power invested in java runtime I heal you ASDM!!!!! June 13th, 2007
Any one who has tried to run Cisco’s ASDM (ASA Security Device Manager) with an IPS unit installed and running probably already know where this is going. Under Configuration and IPS your a provided a link that connects the broswer windows (ASDM) to the management interface of the IPS SSM module for the ASA. From there you are presented with ASA like login which is where the problems begin. If your are running the default java config the IPS screen will crash stating that you do not have enough memory allocated for java. In both Windows and Linux the solutions for this are pretty straight forward. In OS X however much searching and digging did not reveal the magic spot to change the memory settings. Thats where I come in.
In the Applications Folder in OS X you will find a Utilities folder and withing utilities you will find a Java folder;
Within the Java folder you will then select the J2SE 5.0 folder then open the Java Preferences application. Within this application you will be given a blank field for command line strings. In this field you will enter -Xmx256m as seen below;
Following this simply click save. You should be able to simply restart any open web browsers for this to take affect. However I personally reboot the system after java changes for to make sure. Its also worth noting that ASDM officially only supports Microsoft Internet Explorer. However I know from experience that Firefox works great for ASDM. Being that this is focused on Mac users most of you will want to at least try Safari. Let me warn you now that Safari does not work with ASDM at all. This includes both Windows and OS X versions. Sometimes it will connect sometimes it wont but either way it doesn’t take long for Safari to crash when accessing ASDM.
